Monte Cristo Rollers
Who loves a good Monte Cristo sandwich dipped in raspberry jam? I DO! It’s like a cross between French toast and a sandwich. Good old sweet and salty combination! I made this version a little more kid friendly and easier to eat. The key is to make sure you use the right kind of bread that can be manipulated into a flat slice and pliable for rolling. So I suggest using a whole grain white bread or hoagie bun. Instead of using the classic raspberry jam for dipping, I used strawberry jam for that touch of sweetness and spread inside the bun! This is a pretty simple recipe, but oh so good!
Ingredients:
-Two hoagie rolls or 4 slices of bread
-2 eggs
-1/3 cup milk
-4 slices provolone cheese
-4 slices honey ham lunchmeat
-2 Tablespoons butter
-Strawberry jam
Step#1
If using hoagie rolls like I did, open bun and use top and bottom as two separate pieces. Using a mallet or your hands, flatten out bread. Spread a spoonful of jam on each slice.
Step#2
Place provolone and ham in the middle of the slice and tightly roll up.
Step#3
Melt the butter in pan. While that is melting, beat eggs and milk in a separate bowl and generously dip and roll each roll up into the egg mixture.
Step#4
Place each roll up into the pan on melted butter. About 2 minutes on each side. Use tongs to roll around to get even cooking on all sides.
Step#5
Melt a few spoonfuls of jam in the microwave for 15 seconds and drizzle on top of finished Monte Cristo rollers!
FUN FACT: The Monte Cristo type sandwich originated in France as a Croque-Monsieur, which is a battered sandwich with French cheeses such as Gruyere and ham or turkey. Once this sandwich was Americanized, the types of cheeses and meats have been tried in many different ways!
