We are all familiar with chicken and dumplings right? That comforting hot dish that warms our soul from the inside out. Dumplings can be cooked in a variety of ways , like soups and stews, cooked in water or broth.

Since I have a sweet tooth, I thought it would be a great idea to make a savory version of dumplings! Since dumplings are best eaten hot in some type of broth, I wanted to pair it with apples, which is also delicious hot (like apple pie). Feel free to make this "A La Mode!"

Ingredients for dumpling dough:

-1 cup flour

-2 teaspoons baking powder

-1 teaspoon brown sugar

-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

-1/2 teaspoon salt

-1 tablespoon butter

-1/2 cup milk

-1/2 gallon apple cider for boiling and cooking dumplings in.

Ingredients for apple topping:

-2 Granny Smith apples (diced)

-1 teaspoon cinnamon

-1 tablespoon brown sugar

-2 tablespoon butter (for sautéing in the pan)

Tools:

-1 pot

-1 pan

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step#1

Start boiling your apple cider in a pot.

Step#2

Combine your dry ingredients; flour, baking powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and butter. Use a dough cutter to evenly combine all the ingredients.

Step#3

Add milk to dry ingredients and stir until it forms a ball.

Step#4

Once your apple cider has come to a boil, lower the heat a bit and using an ice cream scoop, scoop dough into boiling cider (5 scoops will fit at once).

Step#5

Boil for about 5 minutes, then flip onto other side. cook another 5 minutes until the dumplings are floating on top above the cider.

Step#6

While the dumplings cook, peel and cut your apples. Add butter to pan and melt.

Step#7

Add apples, cinnamon and brown sugar to the pan and saute on medium heat, stirring occasionally until tender and gooey.

Step#8

Remove dumplings from cider, place in a serving dish and top with apples.

**You may add ice cream , whipped cream or drizzle some caramel sauce on top to take it to the next level!

FUN FACT: Dumplings originated as a dough that was either steamed or boiled as an inexpensive way to feed your family, popular during "The Depression." Dumplings can also be in a form of being filled, fried or baked.
