Frosty Pops
The holidays are coming to a close, but we still have New Years ahead, and well....we still have some Winter to get through. What better way to represent Winter time than a snowman! Snowman cake pops are the way to go! You can have so much fun with these little guys, dressing them up any way you like.
I used chocolate cake mix in my "baby cakes" cake pop maker. However, I had to alter the ingredients on the box's directions for it to work with the cake pop maker. If you do not have a cake pop maker, you can make the cake according to the box directions. Let it cool, then crumble up the cake and add frosting until it forms a firm ball. You can form individual cake pop balls. You MUST freeze them to be able to handle them properly when decorating!
Ingredients:
-1 box Devils food cake chocolate cake mix (I used Duncan Hines)
-2 bags of white chocolate chips OR white candy melts
-One can vanilla frosting
-Green food coloring
-Yellow food coloring
-"Keebler" Grasshopper cookies
-Marshmallows
-1 box of "Fruit By The Foot"
Tools:
-Cake pop maker
-Cake pop sticks or sturdy decorative straws.
-Several blocks of Styrofoam to prop cake pops up.
Start by warming up the cake pop maker (if you have one and that is what you're using)
Step #1
If using the cake pop maker, follow directions on box to make cake, but DO NOT add oil, and use milk instead of water. Spray the inside cavity (top and bottom) of cake pop maker with no-stick spray and fill each cavity a little more than half way.
Step #2
Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until a firm cake ball forms. If a little extra "crust" forms around the outer edges of ball, it is easily removed once it's cooled a few minutes. Place cooked balls on lined cookie sheet and place in FREEZER for 45 minutes.
Step#3
Melt your white chocolate in a glass or ceramic bowl in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.
Step#4
Grab 6 cake balls at a time from the freezer to avoid them coming to room temperature. Gently push three cake balls on the pop stick and using a spoon, cover entire thing in melted white chocolate until it resembles a snowman.
Step#5
Stand up snowmen on Styrofoam to cool dry/harden before decorating.
Step #6
Use the remaining melted white chocolate as "glue" to stick the grasshopper cookie hat on top of your snowman's head and follow the same rule for the marshmallow to create the top hat.
Step #7
Roll out the "Fruit By The Foot" and cut it long enough to make a scarf that you can tie around the snowman's neck.
Step#8
Use your can of store-bought frosting and divide into two bowls. Add yellow (or orange) food coloring to one bowl and green to the other. Mix each bowl of frosting completely, and use the tip of a tooth pick to create the green eyes and yellow (or orange) nose. Let your snow men dry for about a half hour before serving or storing! To store, just loosely cover entire "army" of snowmen with foil.
FUN FACT: Are you older than cake pops? Well, if you were born before 2008 then the answer is YES! Cake pops were only recently invented in 2008 and have gained popularity every year!
